What does it do?

Ketoconazole is used in the treatment of:

  • Fungal skin/scalp infections – including pityriasis versicolor/capitis
  • Seborrhoeic dermatitis – for treatment and prevention

 

What is the typical dosage?

Your doctor will recommend a dosage tailored to your need, but typically:

Cream: 1–2 x daily, shampoo: 1–2 times weekly

 

How quickly will it start to work?

Within a few hours; full beneficial effect may take days or weeks.

How long will the effects last?

Up to 24 hours

When should I stop using it?

Complete the full course as directed          
      
 

Is it safe for prolonged use?

What are the possible side effects?

Oral ketoconazole causes severe systemic side effects and has been discontinued.

Topical ketoconazole is considered safe as systemic absorption is minimal, and it rarely causes adverse reactions.

The following have been reported:

  • Uncommon: itching, skin rashes, changes in hair colour
  • Rare: hair loss (alopecia)
  • report to your doctor before taking your next dose if you experience: severe side effects

 

What other considerations are important?

Dosage may be adjusted by your doctor under certain conditions.

  • Certain health problems: history of allergic reaction to antifungal drugs
  • Other medicines: No known interactions
  • Pregnancy and breast-feeding: No evidence of risk
  • Children: No special problems
  • Over 60: No special problems
  • Driving and hazardous work: No special problems
  • Alcohol: No known problems
