What does it do?

• Pizotifen is used for the prevention of migraine headaches – prescribed in cases of frequent, disabling migraine attacks
• It is not effective in relieving migraine attacks once they have started

 

How does it work?

• Pizotifen has antihistamine and some anticholinergic effects
• It is thought to work by blocking the chemicals (histamine and serotonin) that act on blood vessels in the brain

 

How should it be used?

• Treat other conditions that may be triggering migraine – muscle tension
• Avoid the foods that trigger your headaches

 

What is the typical dosage?

Your doctor will recommend a dosage tailored to your need, but typically:

• Total daily dose for adults: 5–4.5mg daily, taken once a day (at night) or 3 x daily
• Maximum single dose 3mg
• Start with a low dose and gradually increase

How quickly will it start to work?

Full beneficial effects may not be felt for several days    
                   

How long will the effects last?

Effects of this drug may last for several weeks      
                       

When should I stop using it?

Do not stop the drug without consulting your doctor    
                             

Is it safe for prolonged use?

Pizotifen stimulates appetite and often causes weight gain during long-term use. Treatment is usually reviewed every 6 months.                 

 

What are the possible side effects?

The following have been reported:

• More common: drowsiness, fatigue, increased appetite, weight gain, nausea, dizziness
• Less common: muscle pains, dry mouth, blurred vision, anxiety, depression
• Report to your doctor before taking your next dose if you experience: any severe side effects

 

What other considerations are important?

Dosage may be adjusted by your doctor under certain conditions.

• Certain health problems: kidney problems, glaucoma, urinary retention, prostate problems, galactose intolerance
• Other medicines: Anticholinergic drugs (including tricyclic antidepressants), sedatives (including sleeping drugs, anti-anxiety drugs, opioid analgesics, antihistamines), antihypertensive drugs
• Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Safety in pregnancy not established, normal doses unlikely to affect the breastfed baby
• Children: Not recommended <7 years, reduced doses necessary for older children
• Over 60: No special problems
• Driving and hazardous work: Caution, the drug can cause drowsiness and blurred vision
• Alcohol: Avoid, enhanced sedative effects
