What does it do?

• Latanoprost eye drops are used in the treatment of open angle (chronic) glaucoma
• It is usuaully added when a beta blocker is not adequately controlling the pressure

 

How does it work?

• Latanoprost is a synthetic derivative of the prostaglandin dinoprost
• It reduces pressure in the eye (intraocular pressure) by constricting the smooth muscle lining the blood vessels, and increasing the outflow of fluid from the eye

 

How should it be used?

• Discard any unused solution 4 weeks after opening
• Do not use other eye drops within 5 minutes of using latanoprost

 

What is the typical dosage?

Your doctor will recommend a dosage tailored to your need, but typically:

1 drop applied to the affected eye, once daily, usually in the evening

 

How quickly will it start to work?

3–4 hours                        
   

How long will the effects last?

24 hours

When should I stop using it?

Do not stop taking the drug without consulting your doctor.         
        

Is it safe for prolonged use?

There is a risk of changes to the iris and eyelashes – this does not affect vision, but it may not resolve once treatment has been stopped.

 

What are the possible side effects?

The following have been reported:

• Quite common: darkening of the iris, darkening/thickening/lengthening of the eyelashes, eye irritation and blurred vision
• Report to your doctor before taking your next dose if you experience: eye pain, bloodshot or swollen eyes, inflamed eyelids, facial swelling, chest pains/wheezing/breathing difficulty (only occurs with excessive use)

 

What other considerations are important?

Dosage may be adjusted by your doctor under certain conditions.

• Certain health problems: contact lenses, allergy to latanoprost, heart problems, asthma
• Other medicines: other eye drops
• Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Safety not established
• Children: Safety not established
• Over 60: No special problems
• Driving and hazardous work: Caution, may cause temporary blurred vision
• Alcohol: No known problems
