What does it do?

Domperidone, an anti-emetic drug used in the treatment of:

• Nausea and vomiting caused by gastroenteritis, chemotherapy or radiotherapy

Domperidone is NOT suitable for:

• Motion sickness or nausea caused by inner ear disorders
• Long-term treatment of gastrointestinal disorders

What is the typical dosage?

Your doctor will recommend a dosage tailored to your need, but typically:

Up to a maximum of 30mg daily, in 1-3 divided doses

How quickly will it start to work?

Within 1 hour
                  

How long will the effects last?

Approximately 6 hours
                       

When should I stop using it?

Can be stopped when no longer needed 

Is it safe for prolonged use?

There is a small increased risk of collapse or sudden death in patients with heart disease. Review after one week to assess need for continued treatment.  

What are the possible side effects?

The following have been reported:

• Less common: breast enlargement or milk secretion, muscle spasms, tremors, reduced libido, rash
• Report to your doctor before taking your next dose if you experience: irregular heartbeat or fainting

What other considerations are important?

Dosage may be adjusted by your doctor under certain conditions.

• Certain health problems: kidney/liver/thyroid disease, pituitary tumour
• Other medicines: Anticholinergic drugs, opioid analgesics, bromocriptine, cabergoline, ketoconazole
• Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Safety in pregnancy not established, adverse effects on the breastfed baby are unlikely at normal doses
• Children: Do not use in children under 16 years
• Over 60: No special problems
• Driving and hazardous work: No special problems
• Alcohol: No special problems
