What does it do?

Enalapril is used (either alone or with a diuretic) to treat:

• Hypertension (high blood pressure)
• Heart failure (reduced ability of the heart to pump blood)

How does it work?

Enalapril belongs to the ACE inhibitor group of vasodilator drugs.

How should it be used?

You may need to lie down for 2-3 hours after the first dose of enalapril, as it can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure

What is the typical dosage?

Your doctor will recommend a dosage tailored to your need, but typically:

Starting dose: 2.5–5mg daily, increased to 10–40mg daily (maintenance dose)

How quickly will it start to work?

30–60 minutes, full beneficial effect may take several weeks 
      

How long will the effects last?

24 hours

When should I stop using it?

Do not stop the drug without consulting your doctor 
                                

Is it safe for prolonged use?

Enalapril may increase blood potassium levels, so your doctor will monitor your kidney function and urine. You may also need regular checks on white blood cell count.

What are the possible side effects?

The following have been reported:

• More common: dizziness, headache (usually diminish with time)
• Less common: dry cough, mouth ulcers or sore mouth (may diminish with time), rash (usually disappears when the drug is stopped or clears on its own)
• Report to your doctor before taking your next dose if you experience: sore throat, fever, swelling of the mouth/lips, breathing difficulties

What other considerations are important?

Dosage may be adjusted by your doctor under certain conditions.

• Certain health problems: kidney/liver/heart problems, history of angioedema or a previous allergic reaction to ACE inhibitors, current/planned pregnancy
• Other medicines: Potassium supplements, potassium-sparing diuretics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), other antihypertensives, lithium, ciclosporin
• Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Not prescribed in pregnancy, safety not established with breastfeeding
• Children: Not recommended
• Over 60: Reduced dose may be necessary
• Driving and hazardous work: caution, the drug can cause dizziness and fainting
• Alcohol: Avoid, alcohol may increase the effects of the drug
