What does it do?

• Indapamide is a diuretic used in the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure)
• Often used in combination with other antihypertensive drugs (but not with other diuretics)

How does it work?

• Indapamide is related in its effects and uses to the thiazide diuretics
• It increases secretion of salt by the kidneys, which results in more water loss from the body, which reduces the total blood volume blood pressure
• Indapamide at low doses does not affect control of diabetes (unlike the thiazides)

What is the typical dosage?

Your doctor will recommend a dosage tailored to your need, but typically:

5–2.5mg, taken once daily in the morning

How quickly will it start to work?

1–2 hours, but full effect may take several months
                             

How long will the effects last?

12–24 hours  
                          

When should I stop using it?

Do not stop taking the drug without consulting your doctor
                                    

Is it safe for prolonged use?

Long-term use of indapamide may lead to potassium loss. You may need regular blood tests to monitor potassium and uric acid levels.                                                          

What are the possible side effects?

The following have been reported:

• More common: fatigue and muscle cramps (due to loss of electrolytes in the urine), rash
• Less common: headache, dizziness, diarrhoea or constipation, nausea
• Report to your doctor before taking your next dose if you experience: palpitations, fainting, tingling, pins and needles, erectile dysfunction

What other considerations are important?

Dosage may be adjusted by your doctor under certain conditions.

• Certain health problems: liver/kidney problems, gout, hyperaldosteronism, hyperparathyroidism, allergy to sulphonamide drugs
• Other medicines: loop diuretics, anti-arrhythmic and digitalis drugs, lithium,
• Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Safety not established
• Children: Not prescribed
• Over 60: No special problems
• Driving and hazardous work: No special problems
• Alcohol: No special problems
